General Information

The Blackman High School Choral Department:
The choral program at Blackman High School is under the direction of Mr. Matthew L. Burns and serves over 150 students in grades 9-12. There are currently four choirs from which the students can choose:
  • The BHS Concert SingersOpen to all students in grades 9-12 without audition.*
  • The Women's Chorale - Open to all students in grades 9-12 without audition.*
  • The Men's ChoraleOpen to all students in grades 9-12 without audition.*
  • The Chamber Singers - Open to students in grades 10-12 by audition only.
In addition to these choirs, a small volunteer group is formed annually to act as a "special occasions" choir that performs at various school celebrations. These celebrations include the traditional Veterans' Day outing and several events during Black History month.

*BHS students can sign up by adding the name of the choir of their choice to their Registration Forms during the annual registration period in February and March.
  • Holiday Concert - December
  • Spring Choral Concert
  • Banquet Choral Showcase - May
  • Various Special Events

All choir members are encouraged to audition for Mid-State, All-State, Freshman Honor Choir, and the Rutherford County Choral Festival. These events take place throughout the year and are a wonderful experience for those chosen. Extra help is given during after-school hours to those that choose to audition.
Further information about the individual choirs, festival information, concerts, and more can be found in the individual menu links.

Each choir is a performance/participation based class, so attendance and participation is critical. Students will receive a daily participation grade for each class period. Factors such as excessive talking, non-participation, attitude issues, etc. will result in a loss of points for that particular day/week. If a student is absent, he or she must make up that day's participation score via an assignment given by the director. If the absence is unexcused, the student will NOT be able to make up the daily grade. Other grades that will factor into the nine-weeks' average will come from quizzes, folder checks, literature checks, and overall involvement.**
Performances: The main objective of rehearsals is the end performance. To miss a performance is a severe breach of professionalism and an insult to fellow choir members. Each performance will be treated as an assessment grade on a 100pt. scale that is summative. If a student is absent from a performance, they will receive a 0/100 for that assessment. Extenuating circumstances such as illness, family emergencies, etc. can be dealt with on a case by case basis. Work commitments are never excused.
**Grade calculation is based on 100% with the following breakdown:
  • Formative: 50 % of grade is rehearsal participation, short quizzes, notebook/folder
  • Summative: 50 % of grade is professionalism, performances, projects, and tests
Questions and/or concerns can always be addressed by emailing the director at Please, no phone calls.
The choral department is just one piece of an amazing Fine Arts program at Blackman. Many students are involved in Drama, Art, and Band. Several crossover among the different ones. We are very proud of our school and its support of Fine Arts. For more information about all programs: Click Here
