National Honor Society
What is NHS? The National Honor Society’s purpose is to “promote high school academic standards, a means of ensuring the continuation of democracy, and an instrument for the betterment of the individual and the school.” The four core tenants of NHS are: character, service, leadership, and scholarship. The Blackman High School NHS Chapter received its charter in May 2001. Find out more about NHS on the national webpage.
Want to be a member during your senior year? Membership is by invitation only; invitations for membership go out in late March/early April of the junior year. $55 dues goes to: national and local dues, graduation stole and certificate, and chapter project funds.
Character counts: "A candidate will be able to demonstrate an outstanding record of conduct and behavior with regard to school and community rules, guidelines, and policies or be able to demonstrate sufficient growth and improvement to compensate for previous inadequacies . . . A person of character demonstrates the following six qualities: respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship" (NHS Handbook).
Service: This is the foundation of our club. Required hours must be served in order to be recognized as a member who graduates with this distinction.
Leadership: Members are encouraged to pursue leadership positions in and/or out of school. Candidates may be able to use leadership roles in other clubs for some of their community service hours.
Scholarship: NHS candidates must have taken 3 or more Honors, Advanced Honors, AP, or Dual Enrollment courses in each year of high school through the first semester of junior year. They must also be enrolled in at least one AP or Dual Enrollment course for the 11th and 12th grade school years. They must retain a GPA of 3.5 or higher through the first semester of Junior year.
What do members do? Members must attend monthly meetings (Check TEAMs and REMIND messages for when meetings are posted).
Members complete 20 hours of community service and turn in the proper paperwork to reflect hours done.
Members must maintain a 3.5 GPA.
