How do we solve equations with square roots in them? Cube roots? Other roots? Fractional exponents? We have a few steps that can get us there. Note that sometimes squaring both sides of an equation can get ugly, so make sure you show your work.


  1. Get the radical by itself.
  2. Raise both sides of the equation to the power that undoes the radical.
  3. Solve for x.
  4. Plug your answer into the original problem to check!!!
Step 4 is extremely important. Radical equations tend to have extraneous solutions pop up. The only way to catch them is to plug in and check.
