The close relationship between radicals and exponents allows us to rewrite radicals as exponents. How? The index just becomes the denominator of the exponent.
Why would we ever want to do that? Mostly because we know how to combine exponents (when you multiply powers, you add the exponents, etc.) and this lets us simplify things we couldn't using just radical techniques.
